Residential Wind Turbines: Cost Considerations
A homeowner's alternative energy goals directly influence the cost of a residential wind turbine. Units that are available "off the shelf" as kits can cost as little as a few hundred dollars up to $6,000. Normally these turbines are designed for limited-use applications, like providing emergency power or minimal power at remote locations like camp sites. When used at a residence, they rarely produce enough electricity to reduce your monthly bill more than 10%. In order to purchase and to install a residential turbine with sufficient power to return energy savings of 50% to 90%, homeowners can expect to spend from $20,000 to $45,000+.
In addition to the turbine, a mounting tower will be required and a power inverter must be wired into the home's existing electrical system. There will be:

This unit can be mounted on either a 15 to 35 foot tower or on the roof itself, provided placement is two feet above the roof line. The Helix has a reputation for producing an absolute minimum of noise and is a good choice for residential areas where noise ordinances may apply. The units begin with a power capacity of 2.5 kilowatts.
As a general rule of thumb, the greater the capacity of the system, the higher the price. Homeowners looking at units capable of producing 4 to 8 kilowatts can expect to pay $22,000 to $55,000; ten-kilowatt systems run $80,000 to $125,000. Also, required tower height goes up in relation to power capacity. By the 4 to 8 kilowatt range, towers of 100 feet will be needed; 10 kilowatts require as much as 120 feet, an issue in most suburban neighborhoods, especially when a homeowners association comes into play.
The first step in even considering a residential wind turbine is a professional site assessment. If the quality of wind at your location is insufficient to offset the price of a turbine, other options should be considered. Also, conduct a home energy audit to understand your power consumption habits monthly and seasonally.
